5 WAYS TO INSTANTLY CHEER YOURSELF UP

Anyone that has read my previous couple of posts or follows me on Instagram/Twitter will no doubt know that the last few weeks have been slightly horrendous. With the passing of my amazing Grandad, followed by a severe bout of tonsillitis (ps please don't think I'm putting them on the same level, the tonsillitis and temperature of 39 degrees was a breeze compared to grief), life has just been, well... pretty shit.

Just saying it how it is...

But I'd like to think that I was a positive person - I think my boyfriend would beg to differ #OccasionalMoaningMyrtle - so today I wanted to turn things around on here and make things a bit cheerier, a bit happier and a bit more uplifting. Because as much as I am of course still completely devastated, it wouldn't be doing my lovely, smiley Grandad justice to be a constant depressing Deirdre on here.

So I thought that there would be nothing more appropriate than a 5 things to instantly cheer yourself up kinda post (with a few additional extras because lols this is me and I am so indecisive). Now, obviously I’m not like “ah shit, sad things have happened, don’t worry I’ll buy some flowers and listen to Harry Potter audible and yippee all better gal pals” but hopefully these little things help to put a smile on your face as much as they do me.

Get Outside
I am the least fit person in existence so this definitely doesn’t mean “go do some burpees bitches” but taking a lovely, chilled walk along your favourite path in the fresh air really does give me a spring in my step and helps - are you ready for a phrase that makes me sound like I’m 90 years old? - blow off the cobwebs.

Lol, FML.
Movie/Boxset marathons
This one pretty much sums up my life; find your favourite show on Netflix/your favourite illegal downloading site and binge watch the shit out of it. Like, literally, get that out of office on, turn your phone off, ignore social media and lap up that me time with your favourite show. I don’t get much time to do this so a couple of hours in the evening is my favourite time to whack on a couple of episodes of Grey’s anatomy - McDreamy, McSteamy and Owen Hunt (don’t underestimate the ginger) get the hell in my life - or Harry Potter (don’t fancy anyone but how can Hagrid not put a massive smile on your face) and chill the eff out with a hot chocolate and family size bag of Kettle Chips and dairy milk #LifeGoals

Shake it off
Call me a loser - I mean, I’d rather you didn’t but would totally understand if you did - but putting on some tunes (lol for using a phrase that makes my Nan look cool) and dancing away to yourself is a sure fire way of putting a smile on your face. You better believe that Taylor Swift pops up many times and you better believe that I literally shake it off and include every cringeworthy hand gesture.

Have things to look forward to
I honestly think that having things to look forward to is so, so important. It keeps you focused, it gives you the motivation to push on in work/life and it makes those rubbish times feel not so rubbish. I’m ridiculously lucky that I have a lot of travel coming up over the next few months so I’m so unbelievably excited about that but whether it’s a trip, date night, girls pizza and wine night in (bloody love those) or even a weekend off, make sure you schedule in some time for yourself to cheer yourself up and give you something to look forward. I mean, just the thought of being in New York in 2 months time makes me want to kiss the old bald guy in front of me on this plane back from Ireland, but for the sake of not being arrested for sexual harassment when I land, I think I’ll just feel all the happy feels internally [insert cry laughter/promise I’m not a sex pest emoji here].

Gratitude
Remember all of the amazing things you have going on. I received this mega babe'in Gratitude journal a little while back and it honestly can be the difference between a good day and bad day. Listing down all of the good things, no matter how big or small they are, really helps to be more positive and give you a little boost. Last week I had the most diabolical day and then I received the loveliest message from a blog reader and I instantly gave a smile that could quite easily have been an audition for a toothpaste advert - followed by bursting into happy tears because oh hey hormones you f**ked up little things you - and realised that even in the saddest of times, we always have things - or people - to be grateful for!

The little things
And then there are the little things that are a little bit too tragic to make a whole paragraph out of but totally totally help and I’m not one bit sorry.

Dog/cat memes, Starbucks frappucinos, Almond magnums, freshly painted nails, the imminent return of Suits, fresh peonies wrapped in pretty brown paper, Harvey Specter (#sorrynotsorry), Curry and Wine nights, Roast dinner and wine Sundays, Wine any day of the week, looking back over old photo's (a sure fire way to produce all the lols), reading your favourite book and so many more but let's not bore you into the weekend.

So that brings me to the end of this post. Obviously everybody is so different and has their own ways of cheering themselves up but I hope you liked this post and picked up a few little ideas along the way. What are your favourite things to do to instantly cheer yourself up? Any new series I need to start once I've stopped perving on McDreamy and McSteamy #GreysAnatomyFangirlForLife?

As always, thanks so much for reading!
