FLAT WHITE, SOHO

flat white
Two things that I love more than anything (I mean, theoretically speaking of course, because nothing comes before Harry Potter, Curry, Homeland, my boyfriend Harvey Spector and blogging) is coffee and cake. Whether you're mid-shopping trip and need a little breather (breather clearly means caffeine and all the sugar in this case) or need somewhere to sit and work from (because we all know that productivity levels times by 10 in coffee shops) I have another London coffee shop option for you that is definitely worth checking out.

Soho is absolutely full to the brim with cute, quirky coffee shops and Flat White is kinda' exactly that. It's cute, it's quirky, it's not particularly groundbreaking but it does have amazing coffee and a gluten free brownie to die for, which made it the perfect mid "boxing day sale shop" stop.

Now that was a bloody mouthful...

My Mum and I, exhausted from our Anthropologie and Zara raiding (I know, what a tough life we lead) went straight in for a latte. Now, I'm not a coffee snob by any means, but I do love my coffee and I can confirm that this was up there with some of my all time favourites lattes. (Please can we take a moment to appreciate just how much of a pretentious tosspot that sentence just made me sound? [insert cry laughter emoji here]). But I do love my coffee and we both enjoyed this a lot. Topped off with a pretty Latte art - although nothing quite as spectacular as Smith and Whistle's - it made the perfect accompaniment to our cakes.

Now, I have to say, the one area in which Flat White falls short in is their lack of gluten free options. With a pretty large main menu of sandwiches, toasties, muffins, croissants, every cake you can possibly think of etc. I was fairly surprised that they only had one gluten free option in the entire cafe. Luckily it didn't matter as the gluten free brownie was truly incredible. Possibly the thickest, richest, most decadent brownie I've ever tasted, but absolutely delicious. But it was just a tad disappointing that should I have wanted actual lunch rather than cake, that wouldn't have been an option.

My Mum went for the Lemon drizzle cake and said it was one of the best she'd ever had (whilst simultaneously telling me that she wished I could try some.) Soft, moist and full of flavour but not too sweet.

Coffee and cake demolished, it was time to venture back out into the world of shopping - I know, I definitely deserved a Blue Peter badge for that - but I have to say that I really enjoyed my little break in Flat White. With a lovely atmosphere, cosy interior and delicious coffee and cake (even if there is only one option for a coeliac) it was the perfect pit stop cafe. What I also love about Flat White is that it has such a fab location. A stone's throw from John Lewis, a short walk from the dreamy Carnaby street... this eatery, close to Citizen M Bankside (one of my favourite hotels and one that I always recommend for anyone wanting to be central but not too close to the hustle and bustle) is a bit of an all rounder and one that I'll definitely be going back to once I've broken my New Year's resolution to eat healthily.

I would love to know what your favourite independent coffee shops are in London? If you have any recommendations, please do let me know :)

As always, thanks so much for reading!

xx

  1. Hi Ellie!
Flat white is one of my favourite coffee places in London. I work in Soho so I'm there a lot. Another favourite is Tap. Nothing like a good coffee.

  8. I love a good independent coffee shop, there's not much or them about near me though. I usually visit them when I go onto day trips to places, Clitheroe has the cutest little cafes.

  10. Shame about the gluten free options, but the brownie sounds fantastic! We don't get a lot of cute coffee shops here so I definitely have to put Soho on my coffee-exploration list!

  22. Hey Olivia,

Thanks for the great write-up. Awesome pictures and comments- sounds like a really fun day out.

We also have 2 other GF cake options most days (which must have been sold out when you visited on boxing day). Theres a gorgeous GF Blueberry friand (in mini blite size and larger size) and also orange and almond polenta cake. So three options daily along with the Brownie (which also comes in a nutty version sometimes).

Please feel free to ask us to make you a no-bread meal next time - sure we can do some very inventive things without bread... and if you have any recommendations for non-gluten coeliac safe bread suppliers please let us know.

Again, thanks for such an in-depth and interesting blog-post!

Cheers Laura, and the flat white team.

    1. Hi Laura,

It's Ellie :) Thank you, i'm so pleased you liked the photo's.

It's such a shame that you do actually have more options as I asked the guys working behind the counter if they could list every option I could have and they only mentioned the brownie. I did ask about lunch options and they said they have nothing but the brownie so maybe the rest of the team should be made aware of non bread lunch options?

It really is a lovely little cafe though and I'll definitely be back for that brownie alone.

  27. This all looks heavenly! I have to admit I'm terrible for just relying on Costa or Pret when I'm desperate for a caffeine fix in London, but I would definitely pop in here to give it a try. I used to go to uni in Bath and they have the most gorgeous little coffee shop called Colonna and Hunter if you're ever around Bath though!

I've never been to Flat White but definitely appreciate a good cafe/coffee place/restaurant review :) Being a coffee addict (and Harvey Specter addict too lol), I would love to enjoy a little (who are we kidding - a huge) sip of coffee there along with a tray bake. 38. Heya,

Quite possibly it was a supplier issue; our crew do know our options well; but around Xmas time some items are less abundant! And the gluten free cakes and friands sell very well!

Come check out our sister cafe sometime! Milkbar- 3 Bateman street.

    Cheers,

    Laura
